While conducting the family survey in the village we became aware of the huge livestock population in the village, and also learnt of the deaths of animals due to the lack of vaccinations. When this was discussed with the people it transpired that they depended solely on the Department of Animal Husbandry for vaccinations as they believed them to be too expensive to do on their own. A detailed study about animal diseases, their seasonal occurrence, and vaccination cycles was undertaken with the help of Mr Ramalingam, the village Gopalmitra. We visited the Department to discuss the possibility of getting the vaccines, but were told that there is an acute shortage of vaccines and that the vaccines supplied would not be sufficient for the Mandal’s large livestock population.

The cost of seasonal vaccinations was also discussed with Mr Ramalingam and it was discovered that it was affordable. Visual awareness charts showing different seasonal diseases for different animals, the reasons, and the precautionary vaccinations to immunize animals, were collected from the concerned department in Hyderabad. These were exhibited in the group meetings, where the affordability of vaccinating animals was also explained. Immediately an account was opened. The initial amount has been rotated for three sets of vaccinations till now, and has now become an ongoing process. The people appear to be very willing to pay the vaccination cost.
